Joseph Brown
Jr.
Feb 26, 1939 — Oct 22, 2022
Houston
Jospeh Brown Jr
Alpha: February 26, 1939 - Omega: October 22, 2022
Joseph Brown, Jr. entered into eternal rest after experiencing a fruitful life. He was the second of three children born to Joseph and Otellia Brown in Houston, Texas. Joseph and his sisters, Doris and Virginia, attended elementary schools in Houston, and all three graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School. Joseph graduated from Phillis Wheatley in May 1956. All three children grew up attending St. Mark Baptist Church and Pure Light Baptist Church, where their dad was pastor. They participated in various church activities, especially those related to music.
Early in his, Joseph accepted Christ as Lord and Savior. He was very active in the church. He sang in the church choir, became Superintendent of Sunday School, rose to the level of Ordained Deacon and was also the Chairman of Finance. As a teenager, Joseph and his two sisters, along fellow church members Estella and Fay Thomas, formed a singing group known and the Brown & Thomas Singers. They sang throughout Houston, as well as in other cities in Texas and Louisianna. Shortly after graduating from high school, Joseph enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Following his tour of duty with the Marines, he returned to Houston and married Gloris Brown in 1961. (The couple has the same surname of "Brown" even before their marriage.) To this union, two children were born – Terry and Stephen.
Joseph worked full-time while attending classes at Texas Southern University, where he graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. He furthered his education at Prairie View A&M University where he earned his Master of Business Administration Degree. He was employed by Houston Lighting & Power Company (Reliant Energy) as a Senior Human Resources Consultant and worked there until accepted an early retirement offer in 1995. Following retirement from HL&P, Mr. Brown taught school in the Houston Independent School District and in the Houston Community College System.
In 2006, while attending the Fiftieth Reunion of Phillis Wheatley's Class of 1956, Joseph reconnected with former classmate, Edna Matlock. In 2008, the married and relocated to Inglewood, California. The couple later returned to and resided in Houston, Texas. Their matrimonial bond was sadly broken with Edna's death in January 2018.
Mr. Joseph Brown leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Terry (Karen) of Los Angeles, California, and Stephen (Nicole) of Duncanville, Texas; four grandchildren, Terry II, Kari, Nicolas and Simone; two sisters, Doris Simonton and Virginia Humphrey; two brothers in law, John Humphrey and Melvin Augustus; two sisters in law, Lola Wallace and Mercy Lee Mac Donald; one aunt, Debra Gary; friend and companion, Georgia Osborne; a host of other relatives and friends.
