OBITUARY FOR  REV.  BYRD LACEY,  JR., D.D.

Rev.  Byrd Lacey, Jr. was one of twelve (12) children born to Byrd Lacey, Sr. and Elizabeth Swearengin Lacey in Chapel Hill, Texas. He grew up in Chapel Hill, attending and graduating from C. H. Hogan High School. He received his early religious training and was baptized at the Providence Missionary Baptist Church, also located in Chapel Hill, Texas.

Rev.  Lacey later moved to Houston, Texas, and received additional religious training at Union Baptist Theological Seminary.   He was ordained as a minister in 1958 at the Mt.  Carmel Missionary Baptist Church by the late Rev. L. E.  Brown and the late Rev. J. S. Smith of Galveston, Texas.    He graduated from Union Baptist Theological Seminary in 1961, with a degree in theology.  He received his Doctorate in Divinity Studies from the Inter-Baptist Theological Center in 1981.

Rev. Lacey  pastored the following five  (5) churches during his tenure as a Pastor: Greater Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Houston, Texas (1983 -2024);  Friendship Missionary Baptist Church Huntsville, Texas  (1977-1983); West Tabernacle Baptist Church, Conroe, Texas  (1971-1977); Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, (1965-1971) and McGee Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Houston, Texas (1960-1965).

In October 1983, Rev. Lacey was called to the Greater Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as Pastor, Teacher, Counselor, Mentor and Friend, until his retirement on March 11. 2024.

Considering all of his multiple awards and recognized accomplishments, Rev. Lacey was most noble for the countless souls he brought to Christ, which he firmly believes is the mission of every Christian.   Rev. Lacey held this principle to be true:  "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not to thy own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy path."  Proverbs 3:5-6.

Rev. Lacey leaves to mourn his passing, his loving and devoted wife of fifty-four (54) years, Marilyn Lacey, four (4) children: Cheryl Chandler (Gene [d]), Kim Carter (Huey) and Dr. Jackie Ward (Darrin), and Cheryl Lacey Donovan (Keith) all of Houston, Texas. His memory is also cherished by his sister, Deverlene Lacy, maternal aunt, Evangeline Ferguson of Houston, Texas, sister-in-laws, Willie Mae Lacy and Frankie Lee Lacy. Rev. Lacey will be deeply missed by his ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, 51nieces and nephews, a host of pastors, preachers, friends and community leaders.

Rev. Dr. Byrd Lacey Jr. departed this life May 25, 2025. Wake Sunday June 1, 2025, from 3-7pm. Services will be held at Greater Mt. Olive B.C. 611 Grove St. Visitation Monday 9-11am. Celebration of Life 11am. Services will be held at New Pleasant Grove B.C. 3221 Bain St. Interment Brookside Memorial Park Cemetery.
