Obituary

On December 28, 1928, Rev. Henry Asberry Spencer Sr. was born to Minnie Ola and Rev. Green Spencer Sr. He attended Bruce Elementary, E.O. Smith Jr. High School and Wheatley High School in H.I.S.D. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces.

In 1947, Henry married Evelyn Bernice Haynes. To this union five children were born, Henry Jr., Brenda, George Sr., David, and Doretha. He joined and was baptized at Greater Mt. Zion Bapt. Church by the late Rev. E.D. Carrington.

In 1954, he married Alma Lee Hardy. To this union three children were born, Gennett, Robert Anthony and Alma Elaine Spencer.

In 1964, Henry married Rosie Bell Williams and welcomed her children as his own. To this union, Melvin was born.

Rev. Spencer was ordained as a minister of the Church of God in Christ. He was the Assistant Pastor at North Main COGIC for 12 years. He was the Pastor of Spencer Tabernacle for 5 years. He was the Pastor of 38th Street COGIC for 5 years. For several years, he attended worship services with his son, Rev. David Spencer. In 2016, Rev Spencer. joined Gospel Hill Baptist Church, where he worshipped until his death.

Rev. Henry Spencer Sr. enjoyed singing Gospel songs, listening to the Word of God and sharing the Gospel with whoever he met. (he never met a stranger).

Preceding him in death are his parents, Rev. & Mrs. Green. Spencer Sr., siblings: Green Jr., Hortense, and Annie, and his son David.

Henry leaves behind his children: Henry Jr., Brenda, George Sr., Doretha (Lionel), Gennett, Alma, Robert and Melvin, stepchildren, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Rev. Henry Spencer Sr., 88, entered into eternal peace with our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 19, 2017. Services will be: held on Saturday, May 6, 2017. Visitation :10:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m.Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Services will be held at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Located at 835 West. 23rd Street. Rev. G. K. Burgess, officiating.
