Life and Legacy of Ruben Paul Slater, Sr.

On Thursday July 6, 2023, Ruben P. Slater, Sr. departed this life at age 70. He is preceded in death by his wife Peggy J. Slater. He leaves behind 3 children from his first marriage (Jeanette Slater), Elizabeth Slater (Tony), Chad X. Slater, Sr. (Kewa) and Ruben P. Slater, Jr. (Christina) and 2 step-daughters from his union with Peggy; Leslie Smith (Kevin-deceased) and Evette Gray (Kirby). as well as his sister Roberta White and a nephew Trepheous Shields and many dear relatives and friends. He leaves a host of grandchildren, family and friends, too numerous to name.

Ruben was born on March 21, 1953, 5th Ward Houston, Texas. He attended E. O. Smith Middle School and graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School. He received a Computer Certification from Barclay Career Schools in 1985 and enjoyed working with computers. He later worked for the City of Houston - Public Works in the Water Production Division as a Mechanic III.

Ruben had a passion for people and would literally give anyone the shirt off his back. He was such a joyful person, that always went out of his way to make other people smile. He volunteered his time with many schools in the 5th Ward area, generously giving back to his community.

Ruben worked tirelessly in prison ministry and created a program for juveniles in his neighborhood while he volunteered at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. He was an avid music lover who enjoyed singing and created many years of music in his home studio, and even played the trumpet in clubs throughout the Houston area at age 17. He was known for his quick wit, dapper dress style, charisma, and his kind and compassionate spirit. Ruben Slater was a force to be reckoned with.

Ruben Paul Slater Sr. departed this life July 6, 2023. Visitation Saturday July 15, 2023, from 9-11am. Funeral 11am. Services will be held at Ebenezer United Methodist Church 7302 N. Main St. Interment Houston Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
